Police arrest 2 men carrying kayak and knives

Staff Writer

---- — SALEM, Mass. — Police say two men were arrested after an officer spotted them walking with a kayak on Osgood Street about 1:30 a.m. yesterday.

Jonathan Bellamy, 20, of 10 High St., Beverly, was arrested on a charge of violating the city’s knife ordinance. He was also wanted on a Salem default warrant with charges of resisting arrest and two counts of assault and battery, according to the incident log.

Also arrested was Matthew Ryan Hennessey, 19, of the same address, on charges of disorderly conduct and violating the city’s knife ordinance.

An officer on patrol on Osgood Street at 1:26 a.m. observed two males carrying a kayak, according to the log. When the two men saw the officer, they “quickly tucked into the rear of a business and discarded the kayak,” wrote the officer.

“Based on this suspicious activity, I stopped to make contact with both males,” wrote the officer.

More officers arrived at the scene, and police soon found both Bellamy and Hennessey were in possession of a knife with a blade longer than 2.5 inches, said Sgt. Andrew Dacy.

Dacy said it was unclear what the pair were doing with the kayak, but that they’d apparently come from Beverly.
