Lawrence murder defendant transferred to Cambridge Jail

LAWRENCE — Rafael Martinez, 21, on trial for the murder of a Lawrence man in 2010, was allegedly beaten in the Middleton Jail and has been transferred to the Cambridge Jail in Middlesex County.

Martinez went on trial in Essex Superior Court in Salem on Monday for the shooting death of Timothy Walker, 20. He was shot while sitting on his grandmother’s 375 Lowell St. porch on July 24, 2010.

Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for the office of District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, said that Martinez’ attorney said in open court yesterday that her client couldn’t be there because he was beaten in jail.

Maurice Pratt, spokesman for the Middleton Jail, said he can’t comment on an ongoing investigation, but confirmed that Martinez had been transferred to the Cambridge Jail.

The trial was expected to resume Tuesday.
