NECC teacher earns national award

---- — LAWRENCE — The National Institute for Staff and Organization Development, recognized Judith Chmielecki with its Award for Excellence for outstanding teachers in the country’s community colleges.

Chmielecki has taught English as a Second Language at Northern Essex Community College for more than 13 years. She was recently named coordinator for the ESL Learning Social Club at the college.

In addition to teaching at Northern Essex, she has been a board member of The Asian Center of Merrimack Valley Inc. and secretary of the executive Board of Directors for eight years. She works closely with staff and on The Friends of the Asian Center Campaign. She is also involved in English as a Second Language curriculum development and in promoting services supporting immigrants.

Chmielecki, of North Andover, has a degree in education from Salem State University and has completed graduate work at Lesley University and Fitchburg State University.

Walk against sexual violence tomorrow

LAWRENCE — The YWCA of Greater Lawrence, The City of Lawrence Mayor’s Health Task Force and Men’s & Women’s Health Working Group is holding its third annual Take Back The Night walk tomorrow from 6-8 p.m. starting at the YWCA FINA House, 203 Haverhill St.

The purpose of the event is to take a stand against sexual violence and to make the night safe for everyone.

Online registration for Dan Ford race

METHUEN — The Dan Ford Foundation will hold its fifth Annual 5 Mile Run and 5K fun walk/run Saturday April 20 at 11 a.m. at the Fireside Restaurant & Pub, 171 Pelham St.

A story in yesterday’s paper had the wrong day for the race.

The 5 mile-run is USATF certified, with cash prizes. The first 500 runners will be given T-shirts. There will be a post-race celebration and awards ceremony. Registration can be made online at www.danfordroadrace.com or the day of the race from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Day’s Hotel & Conference Center, first floor in Rose Grand Ballroom, 159 Pelham St.

Church hosts meeting on planning a funeral

METHUEN — Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish is hosting an informational session on planning a Catholic funeral, May 5 at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa Church, 22 Plymouth St.

The goal of the seminar is to help Catholics select their liturgical instructions for their family members and funeral directors.

During the meeting, participants will learn about the Mass of Christian burial, the funeral rites, scripture and new music often used at funerals.

Pastor, the Rev. Christopher Casey, will give liturgical instruction at the event, while Lori Charette-McLaughlin and Christine Torres will present works appropriate for burials.

The free meeting is open to all Catholics.

‘Together for Tiffany’ pancake breakfastset for Saturday

METHUEN — The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Methuen/Merrimack Valley team ‘Together For Tiffany’ is holding a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday April 20 from 8-10 a.m. at Applebee’s , 56 Plaistow Road, Haverhill.

Tickets are $5 and include breakfast, coffee, juice and milk. There will also be raffles for a pair of Red Sox tickets, Lia Sophia jewelry, Tastefully Simple basket, signed sports memorabilia and more.

Barbershop Chorus to hold bookstore fundraiser

The Beverly Northshoremen Barbershop Chorus will hold a Bookfair Fundraiser on Saturday, April 27, at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 210 Andover Street, behind the Northshore Mall in Peabody.

The Northshoremen chorus and its three quartets will perform from 1–5 p.m.
