Police probe Phillips Academy break-in

ANDOVER — Police are investigating a break-in at Phillips Academy.

The incident was reported to police at 2:13 p.m. yesterday, according to Lt. Lee Britton. Other than saying the break-in is under investigation, Britton said he had no further information.

It was not clear what, if anything, had been stolen as of last night, according to Tracy Sweet, spokeswoman for the academy. A man was working in a building at Phillips when he encountered another man who did not belong there, Sweet said.

When the workman asked the intruder what he was doing there, he fled, she said. Sweet said she had no additional details.

Phillips Academy, founded in 1778, straddles Main Street. It is among the most prestigious private preparatory schools in the United States and touts itself for being “ready to meet, match, and expand the minds and passions of some of the brightest students in the nation and the world,” according to the school’s website.

Phillips has an enrollment of 1,143 students.
