Lawrence cop shoots man to stop baseball bat attack

LAWRENCE — A city police officer shot a man who was beating another man with a baseball bat in an alley next to the packed Club Copa nightclub at closing time early yesterday morning, authorities said.

Officer William Green shot Jose Concepcion, 26, in the chest to stop him from repeatedly hitting the unidentified victim with a baseball bat in an alley adjacent to the north side of the 1 Mill St. club, according a report released yesterday by District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office.

About 400 people were in the nightclub at closing time, police said.

After he was shot, Concepcion, of 187 Chestnut St., Lawrence, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital where he was in stable condition yesterday. He was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The 27-year-old beating victim was first taken to Lawrence General Hospital but later transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston where he was treated for blunt force trauma to his head and multiple stab wounds to his torso. He was upgraded from serious to stable condition late yesterday afternoon.

Green was put on paid administrative leave, which is department protocol when an officer is involved in a shooting, Police Chief John Romero said.

Romero said Green has never shot anyone before in his seven years on the police department.

State troopers assigned to Blodgett’s office are investigating the shooting because a Lawrence officer was involved, Romero said.

“Whenever there is an officer involved shooting we defer to the District Attorney’s office,” he said.

Dressed in full uniform, Green was working a paid detail at the 1 Mill St. club early Sunday morning. After finding Concepcion beating the man, Green “issued multiple verbal commands” to drop the bat and stop hitting him, according to Blodgett’s office.
