Work-off program helps older taxpayers earn abatements

NORTH ANDOVER — There are some advantages to being a senior citizen.

Local residents who are 60 or older can apply for 35 Tax Work-Off positions. By providing 90 hours of service, at no more than 10 hours per week, a senior citizen can earn a $652.50 abatement on his or her real estate taxes.

The service must be completed by May 30, 2014. The positions will be filled by a lottery.

In addition to being at least 60, each applicant must own and live in the home for which he or she is seeking a tax abatement.

Those interested in taking advantage of this program can pick up applications at the Senior Center, 120R Main St. Senior citizens enrolled in the program help out in various town offices.
