METHUEN — Forest Lake reopened to swimmers yesterday a day after the recreation spot was closed down due to high E. coli bacteria levels.
Police Chief Joseph Solomon reported the lake was safe for swimming at noontime yesterday.
“Swim and have fun,” Solomon tweeted.
Heavy rain and humid temperatures caused the E. coli bacteria spike, which were detected in water samples taken Tuesday. City officials closed the lake Wednesday morning as a result.
The lake is popular this time of year for swimming, boating and fishing. It opened to the public June 22 and beach access is located off Hampshire Road.
