Alleged shoplifter ordered held on seven warrants

NORTH ANDOVER — A man charged with stealing a watch from a shelf at Kohl’s Department Store on Sunday afternoon was ordered held on the outstanding warrants he had against him.

David Rivera, also known as Jose Morales, 32, of 44 Third St., Lowell, fled Kohl’s after taking a $30 watch , according to a report filed by Officer Thomas Driscoll. A loss prevention officer from the store pursued him into the parking lot. When police confronted Rivera outside Market Basket, he claimed he had put the watch back on the shelf, according to Driscoll’s report.

A videotape from the store, however, showed Rivera taking the watch, police said. When police ran a background check on Rivera, they discovered he had seven warrants against him. The warrants charged him with drug violation near a school, number plate violation, possession of a Class A drug with intent to distribute, driving an uninsured vehicle, driving an unregistered vehicle, unlicensed operation and assault and battery.

While in police custody, Rivera was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of an anxiety attack, Driscoll wrote. The shoplifting incident was reported at 4:53 p.m.

At Rivera’s arraignment Monday, Lawrence District Court Judge Mark Sullivan ordered the defendant held on the outstanding warrants, which were issued by Salem and Brockton district courts. The judge ordered Rivera to appear in the Lawrence court Sept. 26 for a pretrial hearing on the shoplifting charge.

Slightly more than 24 hours after Rivera’s arrest, police arrested another man who allegedly stole merchandise from Kohl’s. A loss prevention officer told police the shoplifter ran through the parking lot, got into a burgundy minivan and headed west on Route 114.

Officer Jay Corr stopped the minivan near a Dunkin’ Donuts on Route 114. Pedro Fontanez, 26, of 19 Winter St., Lawrence, was arrested and charged with shoplifting.
