3 vehicle crash ties up I-495

METHUEN — A Bradford man was taken to the hospital yesterday morning after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 involving a tractor trailer that closed one of the northbound lanes, State Police said.

The man, a 34-year-old whom police did not identify, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital with injuries the Fire Department characterized as “potentially serious.”

State Police spokesman David Procopio said the sequence of events and the cause of the crash are still under investigation. The driver of the tractor trailer was a man from Detroit, and the driver of the other vehicle was a man from Germany, he said.

Methuen Deputy Fire Chief Charles Ripley said one vehicle came off the ramp onto Interstate 495 north at the Route 110 junction and collided with the tractor trailer. The axle detached from the trailer, which dragged along the road and struck another vehicle.

At some point, the trailer separated from the truck, Procopio said.

Ripley said the other two people involved declined treatment.

The crash occurred at 10:52 a.m., and one lane of I-495 northbound was closed until noon, Procopio said.
