METHUEN — Five people from Manchester, N.H., were arrested yesterday evening after police said they saw a drug transaction take place on Lawrence Street.
Jose Ramone Rivera, 34, 253 Spruce St., Patricia Sue Tompkins, 30, 253 Spruce St., Shauna Marie Gionet, 21, 59 Dudley St., Eric James Kelly, 29, 128 Central St. and Miguel Jose Maurin, 20, 363 Manchester St., all of Manchester, were arrested at 6:24 p.m. on Broadway at the Route 213 interchange.
Police patrolman Jeff Torrisi, a canine unit, spotted three people — Gionet, Kelly and Maurin — standing outside a vehicle parked at a liquor store on Lawrence Street yesterday at about 4:30 p.m., said police Sgt. Jim Gunther. They all appeared to be looking for someone, so Torrisi stopped to watch the group.
Rivera and Thompkins appeared from Camden Street and walked to the group, conducting what police believe was an exchange inside the vehicle, Gunther said.
Rivera and Thompkins left the vehicle and got into another, which circled the block and left them out on Phillips Street. They returned to the first car and all left together.
Police stopped them on Broadway and found 4.2 grams of heroin in the back seat, Gunther said. Police believe they purchased the heroin and planned to drive back to Manchester to use it.
Rivera was charged with manufacture or distribution of a class A substance and possession of a class A substance; Tompkins was charged with possession of a class A substance; and Gionet, Kelly and Maurin were each charged with knowingly being present where heroin is kept.
Gunther said none of them have criminal records in Massachusetts, and a couple had minor offenses in New Hampshire.
