Wanted: Volunteers to serve on town boards, and committees

By Paul Tennant

---- — NORTH ANDOVER — The hours can be long, the pay is zero, the meetings usually take place at night – after one has put in a long day at work, unless one is retired – and sometimes there’s even the possibility of making an enemy or two.

Yet there can be a great deal of fulfillment in serving the community by serving on a board or commission.

William Gordon, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, points out the town needs to have people serving on the Planning Board, Conservation Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Community Preservation Committee and other panels to carry out its functions.

Gordon, the other selectmen and Town Manager Andrew Maylor will soon make appointments to a large number of boards and commissions.

These include the Affordable Housing Trust, Board of Assessors, Audit Committee, Cable TV Advisory Committee, Community Access & Media, Community Preservation Committee, Conservation Commission, Council on Aging, Cultural Council, Commission on Disability Issues, Economic Development Council, Emergency Management Agency, Festival Committee, Board of Health, Historical Commission, Housing Partnership Committee, Machine Shop Village Neighborhood Conservation District Committee, Old Center Historic District Committee, Planning Board, Poet Laureate Committee, Board of Registrars of Voters, Stevens Estate Board of Trustees, Sustainability Committee, Windrush Farm Steering Committee, Youth and Recreation Council and Zoning Board of Appeals.

The selectmen and manager will also appoint a constable and harbormaster.

If you are interested in serving on any of these committees, send a letter of interest stating which committee(s) you wish to be considered for and provide background experience about your qualifications to: Town Manager’s Office, 120 Main St., North Andover, MA 01845 by April 26, 2013.
