---- — BOSTON (AP) — The top Democrats in the Massachusetts House and Senate have set campaign spending records.

Senate President Therese Murray of Plymouth reported expenditures of more than $513,000 last year. That’s the highest recorded for a Senate candidate. Murray held the previous spending record of $474,000 in 2004.

The study by the Office of Campaign and Political Finance also found that House Speaker Robert DeLeo of Winthrop reported expenditures of nearly $527,000 in 2012, the highest ever reported by a candidate for state representative.

The previous record was set in 2008 by former Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, who reported $476,000 in expenditures.

Murray and DeLeo both faced Republican challengers last year. Murray also faced a Democratic primary challenger.

Total spending by all legislative candidates in 2012 was $11.9 million, a drop of nearly $5 million from 2010.
