---- — LAWRENCE — A two-alarm fire did an estimated $25,000 worth of damage to a vacant single-family house at 3 Merrimack View Court early yesterday morning, according to fire Deputy Chief Brian Murphy.
The first alarm was sounded at 4:58 a.m. The second alarm, which brought every Lawrence fire engine to the scene, came at 5:31 a.m. There were no injuries, the deputy chief said.
The fire started in the chimney and produced lots of smoke, Murphy said. A caller from two streets away reported the fire, he said.
Firefighters had to tear away walls and ceilings on the first and second floors to get at the flames. Ladder 4 aimed water into the chimney of the two-and-a-half-story wood frame structure. It took about an hour for firefighters to get the blaze under control, Murphy said.
Murphy estimated the house is 70 to 80 years old. The building was undergoing renovations, he said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Murphy said.
Crews from Andover and Methuen covered the city’s stations while local firefighters were on Merrimack View Court. Lowell send a ladder truck to provide backup.
