---- — LAWRENCE — A Lowell man was arrested on Interstate-495 after he allegedly robbed the Sovereign Bank at Broadway and Park Street this morning and then led State Police on a 6-mile chase.

A 911 call came in to local police at about 10:30 a.m. that someone had just robbed the bank at 55 Broadway.

A teller in the bank had been able to see the license plate number of the man's getaway vehicle, a Ford Explorer with Massachusetts plates. Lawrence police immediately issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for the suspect vehicle.

State Trooper Thomas Janeczak, who was working a paid detail on I-495 southbound in Lowell, located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. The suspect refused to stop and continued south on 495. Janeczak pursued the vehicle for approximately 6 miles.

The driver eventually stopped the SUV near the Woburn Street exit in Lowell.

George Melendez, 46, of Lowell, was arrested and has been charged with one count of bank robbery.

Trooper Janeczak was assisted during the pursuit and arrest by Trooper Daniel Doiron who was also working a paid detail on 495 and Trooper James McTeague of the Troop A Community Action Team.

Melendez is being held in the Lawrence police station for processing. Police said he was out on bail and awaiting trial for a bank robbery in Lowell about six months ago.
