LAWRENCE — A woman from Norfolk was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with child endangerment after police say she was shooting up heroin while her one-year-old daughter sat in the back of the car.
Lori Yanni, 30, of 26 Priscilla Ave., Norfolk, was charged with possession of a Class A drug (heroin), possession of Class E drug (prescription pills) and child endangerment following the 2:20 p.m. incident at West and Acton streets.
A man in the car with her, John McLean, 29, of 18 Almont St., Lowell, was charged with possession of heroin and prescription pills.
Lt. Mark Ciccarelli said he was on patrol as part of the street narcotics enforcement unit when he drove past a 2001 Honda Civic parked on Acton Street and driven by Yanni with McLean in the passenger seat.
Ciccarelli said he observed the man with a hypodermic needle and syringe in his right hand and an orange syringe cap in his teeth.
He and Det. Carmen Purpora approached the car and as they did, observed McLean holding a spoon with brown powder in it. He was ordered to drop the spoon and the hypodermic needle and complied.
Both were placed under arrest without incident.
During a search of McLean, police found heroin in his right front pocket. As they searched the vehicle, police discovered Yanni’s child in the back seat.
During additional searches, police found numerous pills without prescriptions.
