Sick fox put down in Lawrence

LAWRENCE — Police shot and killed a sick fox that was running around in the Commonwealth Motors car dealership parking lot yesterday morning.

At 7 a.m., police were called about a coyote that was running around the lot at 1 Commonwealth Drive.

Officer Jeff Hart investigated and identified the animal as a fox that appeared to be sick and injured.

“It would not move from its position and would only stand and sway back and forth with some type of frothing around its mouth,” Hart wrote in a report.

Sgt. John Nicoletti also responded and said the young fox “clearly was not in a healthy condition.” The fox appeared to have been hit by a car and it’s lower jaw was broken, he said.

Dealership cars were moved from the area, a police cruiser was parked behind the animal and traffic was stopped in both directions nearby. Hart fired three shots with his .40 caliber Sig Sauer service revolver, putting the sick animal down, according to his report.
