LAWRENCE — Two men accused in the shooting of a woman on Bennington Street early Sunday morning were held without bail until a judge decides whether they pose a danger to the community and should remain in jail until trial.
A dangerousness hearing will be held today for Luis Nunez, 26, of 37 Bennington St., and Armand Wright, 31, of 128 Bowdoin St.
Nunez was arrested at the scene and police said they believe he was the shooter. He is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a firearm), possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of cocaine.
Wright was arrested near the scene and was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon.
Police found the victim on the sidewalk in pain, with blood around her.
Her husband was next to her pleading for help for his wife, according to police reports.
Police found three live 9 mm rounds on the street near the scene, and four spent 9 mm shell casings scattered about the street and sidewalk.
Witnesses told police the couple had been in their yard when two men came up to them and an argument ensued. The argument escalated to the point where Nunez, who also goes by the street name of "Chupa," drew a pistol from his waistband and shot the woman, police said. She suffered wounds to her right arm and abdomen.
Police said they found a gun inside the sport utility vehicle the men were using, which was found in a parking lot about 50 yards from the scene of the shooting.
The victim told investigators she had a confrontation with Nunez, who had threatened to kill her and had punched her in the face at the time.
According to police, she said she saw the two men get out of a vehicle and approach her and her husband. She said Nunez punched her in the chest and held a gun to her face, and she was shot when she tried to flee.
