City People Master

Andover area quilter, Betsy Abbott, has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2010 American Quilter's Society (AQS) Quilt Show and Contest, being held March 24 through 27, at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, Pa. Abbott has been chosen to display the quilt, Tidepool Treasure. The annual contest is offering more than $42,000 in total prize money.



Cameron Brien, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Brien of Lawrence, has been named to the commended list at Tabor Academy for the first semester of the 2009-2010 academic year. Brien is a member of the Class of 2010.



Yogi Layne, child of Tracy and Stuart Layne of Andover, has been named to the honor roll at Phillips Exeter Academy, having earned honors.



Megan Monroe of Methuen was named to the dean's list at Salem State College for the fall 2009 semester.



Alexander Lennon, son of J. Matthew and Mary Ann Lennon of Andover, began his first year at Saint Michael's College this semester. Lennon is a graduate of Andover High School.



Leah McKnight of Andover, daughter of Helen and Robert McKnight, entered Colgate University with the class of 2013 in late August. McKnight is a graduate of Brooks School.



Mackenzie Pelletier, daughter of Kathy Pelletier of Danvers and Brian Pelletier of Andover, has been named to the dean's list at Hamilton College for the 2009 fall semester. Pelletier, a senior majoring in economics, is a graduate of The Governor's Academy.



Jaclyn Specht, daughter of Rebecca and Scott Specht of North Andover, has been named to the dean's list at Hamilton College for the 2009 fall semester. Specht, a sophomore, is a graduate of North Andover High School.



Army Pvt. Luis Aponte has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. The course of instruction included basic combat training and advanced individual training (AIT). The basic trainee received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history and traditions. Aponte is a 2005 graduate of Methuen High School. He is the son of Janet Aponte of Methuen.



Army Pvt. Alexander Crowell has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics. Crowell is a 2001 graduate of Methuen High School. He is the son of Clara and Steven Crowell of Methuen.



Marc Turiano of Andover has been named an outstanding future professional by the Massachusetts Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD). Turiano will graduate from Salem State College this spring. He currently boasts a 3.9 grade point average and is a frequent recipient of dean's list honors. Turiano is the assistant volleyball coach to Salem State College and St. John's Prep, and head coach for the U-15 North Shore Junior Olympic Volleyball program. He is a member of the MAHPERD Council of Future Professionals and serves as an executive board member for Salem State's Sport and Movement Science Club.



On Friday, March 5, Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School held its annual Science Fair. At this event, Andover residents, Jae Mun Bang and Jeffrey Springwater, were recognized for their submissions in the Biology 2 division and 12th Grade Physical Sciences division respectively. Jae Mun Bang's project on eating spices and heart rate earned him, and his partner Steven Li, a junior at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School, an honorable mention. Jeffrey Springwater's project earned him, and his partner Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School senior Mark Corcoran, first place in describing turbine blade design. Jae Mun Bang lives with his guardian, Mr. Moon Hang-Lee in Andover, while Jeffrey Springwater is the son of Dr. and Mrs. David Springwater, also of Andover.



Katherine Nichols of Andover qualified for the spring semester dean's list at Babson College.



John Chartier of Andover qualified for the spring semester dean's list at Babson College.



Thomas Degregorio of Lawrence earned academic honors for the spring 2009 semester and was named to the dean's list at Northern Essex Community College.



Abigail Cook, daughter of Douglas and Amy Cook of Andover, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknell University. She is a 2009 graduate of Andover High School.



Devin Geary, daughter of Joseph and Ann Geary of Andover, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknell University. She is a 2008 graduate of Andover High School.



Julie Ingram, daughter of Jeffrey and Jane Ingram of Andover, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknell University. She is a 2009 graduate of Phillips Academy.



Ian Reddick, son of Paul and Sherri Reddick of North Andover, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknell University. He is a 2008 graduate of North Andover High School.



Bradley Yount, son of Bradley and Ann Yount of Andover, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bucknell University. He is a 2006 graduate of Andover High School.



Evan Rurak of Methuen was named to the dean's list at Tufts University for the fall 2009 semester. Rurak is a member of the class of 2012.



Kaleigh Birch of Methuen was named to the dean's list at Saint Joseph's College of Maine for the fall semester.





Caitlin McGrath of North Andover has been named to the president's list at Western New England College for the fall semester of 2009. McGrath is a sophomore majoring in marketing.





Hashby Casado of Lawrence received a bachelor of science in biomedical laboratory and clinical sciences from Boston University in September 2009.

Army Pfc. Melissa Lucas has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Lucas earned distinction as an honor graduate. The private is a 2007 graduate of Central Catholic High School. She is the daughter of Paul Lucas of Salem, N.H., and Jeanette Lucas of Methuen.





Army Pvt. Miguel Carattini has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Carattini is a 1997 graduate of the Bonifacio Sanchez Jimenez School, Aibonito. He is the son of Miguel Carattini of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, and brother of Jounel Carattini of Lawrence.


