METHUEN — As she returned to the classroom this week, Methuen High School environmental science teacher Mary Haight brought firsthand experience that she learned over the summer.
Haight spent her summer learning about energy models in buildings under construction while working at the Danvers-based construction management firm William A. Berry & Son Inc. She was one of several local teachers learning about real-world applications that relate to the science, math and technology, according to a press release.
The Teacher Externship Initiative is the brainchild of the North Shore Workforce Investment Board.
Program leaders hoped providing teachers with tangible learning experiences would help make classroom lessons more relevant for students and motivate youths to pursue careers or further study in those areas.
The teachers took a three-credit course at Salem State College while working a 40-hour week at private companies.
They were paid by the employers, the release said.
