North Andover man charged with attempted murder

NORTH ANDOVER — A North Andover man was in custody yesterday and will be arraigned Monday on charges of attempted murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after stabbing another man at 119 Massachusetts Ave. around 2 p.m. yesterday.

Alcides Barahona, 29, of that address, was arrested at his residence and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery domestic, attempted murder, and assault and battery to cause serious bodily injury.

The stabbing was described as a domestic incident by Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokeswoman for District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

The incident took place shortly before 2 p.m. when police responded to a 911 call to the lower Massachusetts Avenue area.

Monahan said the family member who was stabbed was older, but she would not divulge the relationship between the two men. She said he was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and then airlifted to a Boston Hospital. She said the victim was in critical condition.

Police blocked off access to the small business park at 105 Massachusetts Ave., where Brothers Machinery Exchange and Desmond Landscape Contractors are located.

Crime scene tape was extended from the front of a two-family house at 119-121 Massachusetts Ave. to the business park, where North Andover police Lt. Charles Gray and other police officers were investigating. Besides numerous North Andover police vehicles, a Lawrence cruiser was parked at the site.

The incident remains under investigation by North Andover and State Police.

Barahona will be arraigned Monday morning in Lawrence District Court.
