Spooky fun comes to golf course

METHUEN - The Merrimack Valley Golf Club is having a Halloween party Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the entire community is invited.

The family-fun event will have a costume contest, doughnuts on a string, scary mask-making, a hole in one contest, games and much more.

Cider and doughnuts will be served.

The golf course is at 210 Howe St.

Deadline to nominate elder caregivers set

LAWRENCE — The time is now to nominate someone for the Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley 2009 David Bruno Caregiver Award.

The annual award recognizes a caregiver for their compassionate and dedicated care in making it possible for an elder to remain in the community. It is given in memory of David Bruno, a case manager with Elder Services, who died in 1991.

Nominees must be: a resident of one of the 23 communities in the Valley; a non-paid person who provides primary care for an elder 60 years or older, or under 60 with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's; and providing adequate daily care to the elder. Nominee may be a family member or a non-relative.

The award will be presented at the agency's annual meeting Nov. 20 at the Wyndham Hotel, Andover.

Seniors can get flu shots in Atkinson

ATKINSON — The Atkinson Elderly Affairs Department will offer flu shots to senior citizens on Thursday at the Atkinson Community Center.

The seasonal flu shots will be given from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All medical insurance will be accepted.

Cost is $30 for those paying in cash.

Neighborhood group invites candidates to talk

LAWRENCE — The monthly meeting of the Tower Hill Neighborhood Association will be Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., at Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Judson Hall, 526 Lowell St.

Candidates for City Council District C and D seats, mayor and councilor at-large have been invited to attend. Each candidate will be given time to explain their vision for Lawrence.

Quality of life issues will also be discussed with police Chief John Romero and fire Chief Peter Takvorian. THNA meetings are open to everyone, light refreshments will be available. Learn about Facebook at Leach Library

LONDONDERRY — Leach Library will host a talk on the basics of the social networking Web site Facebook on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m.

The presentation will be given by senior reference librarian David Smolen.

The free program will provide an introduction to Facebook. Smolen will explain how to sign up for a Facebook page, how to search for friends and family, and how to protect your privacy online. Bring your own WiFi-enabled laptop and follow along.

The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.

District Attorney's annual breakfast

PEABODY — Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's annual Policymaker's Breakfast on Nov. 10 will focus on efforts to combat drug trafficking and prevention and treatment initiatives for young people.

The breakfast will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Peabody Marriott, 8A Centennial Drive.

Arnie Moorin, the national director of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) and a deputy director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, will address demand reduction initiatives and strategies to combat drug trafficking threats.

Peggy K. Quigg of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will discuss national trends and drug and alcohol prevention and treatment initiatives for young people.

Blodgett will distribute copies of his newest prevention program, "The Truth About Drugs and Alcohol."

Essex County legislators, judges, chiefs of police, educators, mayors and town managers will be among those attending the breakfast.
