LAWRENCE — A 19-year-old city woman told police she was at a bank ATM on Essex Street when a man reached into her car through the unlocked passenger side door and stole her purse.
The victim told police she confronted the man who denied going into her car, but held his left hand behind his back.
She told police the man appeared to be in his 30s and was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and a black Phillies ball cap.
The man fled down by City Hall and then ran west on Common Street, she said.
The black clutch bag contained mostly makeup and possibly an ATM card.
Police checked the area but were unable to locate the man.
The theft was reported at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
