Cop on road detail nabs shooting suspect

LAWRENCE - A city man suspected in a shooting earlier this month was arrested Thursday when a police officer working a paid road detail spotted him on Warren Street.

Officer Shaun McLellan was outside 18 Warren St. when Carlos Ruiz, 23, of 18 Morton St., pulled up to a nearby home in a black Nissan Maxima.

According to a police report, Ruiz got out of the car and walked up to McLellan and asked him about the hole being dug in the street.

This is when McLellan identified Ruiz, who was wanted on warrant in relation to a Nov. 7 shooting at the corner of Osgood and Farnham streets.

Police believe Ruiz fired one .40 caliber bullet at a gray 2007 Honda Civic being driven by his girlfriend's 21-year-old ex-boyfriend. Also in the car at the time of the shooting was the driver's 17-year-old sister and 13-year-old niece.

The shooting occurred shortly after a verbal altercation between the men.

After Ruiz spoke to McLellan on Warren Street, Ruiz entered a nearby home, according to a police report. McLellan then went to the front door and asked Ruiz to move his vehicle. Upon leaving the home, Ruiz was arrested.

Ruiz is charged with three counts of assault with intent to murder, carrying a loaded firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card, malicious damage over $250, and carrying a firearm.

Also arrested Thursday in connection withthe shooting was Reyna Benitez, 19, of 151 Farnham St. She is charged with witness intimidation and hindering a police investigation.
