Three seriously injured in head-on Route 213 crash

METHUEN — A head-on collision on Route 213 yesterday afternoon sent three people to the hospital with serious injuries and shut down part of the highway for hours as state troopers investigated the two-vehicle accident.

Traffic was backed up on Route 213 eastbound for hours after the 2:45 p.m. crash that happened west of exit 3.

All cars were being detoured to Route 28.

State police were not releasing the names or conditions of the those involved in the accident last night.

They would only say one driver was a 19-year-old Methuen resident and the other was a 63-year-old Groveland man who was with an unknown passenger. "All three are in serious condition," said Sgt. Michael Popovics.

Popovics said the Methuen man was driving a 2006 Pontiac G6 westbound when he crossed the median into oncoming traffic.

The Pontiac struck a 2000 Ford Explorer head-on.

The Groveland man, who was driving the Explorer, and his passenger, were taken to Lawrence General Hospital.

The Methuen man was taken to Lawrence General Hospital but transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

The crash is being investigated by Trooper Michael Crowley out of the Andover barracks.
