Methuen students to play in large concert

METHUEN — Timony Grammar School students Melanie Conner-Myers and David Raucci will join more than 200 other young musicians from 40 communities across the Merrimack Valley and North Shore on Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra's Afternoon of Concerts.

Raucci, a sixth grader, plays the viola and Conner-Myers, a seventh grader, performs on bassoon in the Intermezzo Orchestra. They will play in the 3 p.m. concert at the Ipswich Performing Arts Center at Ipswich High School in Ipswich.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Children younger than 12 are admitted free, and family passes are $20. More details, call 978-986-2055.

Basketball registration at YMCA

METHUEN — Time is running out to sign up to play on the Methuen YMCA's Youth Basketball League.

The basketball program is for boys and girls ages 5 to 15, and play begins on Saturday, Dec. 12. To register or ask questions, call the Methuen YMCA at 978-683-5266.

Adult role models needed to assist teens

LAWRENCE — Family Service received two federal grants to provide mentoring programs for inner-city teens.

The social service agency will receive $325,000 annually for the next four years to provide one-to-one mentors to youth whose parents are in prison and to students at-risk of dropping out of school.

The program aims to help teens reach their full academic and personal potential. Some 250 teens will be paired with an adult. Staff members will supervise and facilitate monthly group activities.

Lions Club serves up a holiday concert

SALEM, N.H. — A Christmas concert will be performed Friday at 7 p.m. at Salem High, sponsored by the Salem Lions Club and the Salem Council of Churches.

Proceeds will provided disadvantaged families with food and fuel assistance.

Donation of a nonperishable food and $5 for adults and $3 for seniors is suggested.

Artists host winter show and sale

SALEM, N.H — The Greater Salem Artists Association will host its annual Winter Art Show at Kelley Library, 234 Main St., on Friday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Original artwork in oils, acrylics and watercolors, photography and more, all by local artists, will be on show and for sale. Salem school students will show their work, as well. On Saturday, the artists will hold a demonstration.

Library cancels concert

LAWRENCE — A concert by The Gentlemen Songsters Barbershop Chorus, which was scheduled for Sunday at Lawrence Public Library, has been canceled.
