CHELMSFORD — A morning car accident yesterday has taken the life of a Seabrook man, sending another to a Boston hospital with serious injuries, according Massachusetts State Police.
Anderson Cadell Jr., 44, 20 Perkins St., died at the scene. Salvatore Pintone, 30, of Lynnfield was transported to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston by medical helicopter.
Police said both worked for United Oil Recovery Inc., a private environmental cleanup company, on a roadside work detail at the time of the accident. The crew was cleaning up a diesel fuel spill from an accident that had occurred last week.
According to the state police, the three-car accident took place about 10:30 a.m. on Route 3 northbound, just north of the Route 110 (exit 31) in Chelmsford, closing the road for almost three hours. The roadway was finally cleared of traffic about 2 p.m.
According to the preliminary investigation being conducted by state police Sgt. Walter Hanley, a Lowell woman, Juanita McKenzie, 33, was driving north on Route 3 in a 2001 Acura MDX, partially in the far right lane and breakdown lane, when her car hit the rear of a 1999 Peterbilt truck owned by United Oil Recovery, parked inside a work site setup.
"Two workers for the company were pinned between their vehicle and McKenzie's vehicle," according to the police release. "One of the workers, a Seabrook, N.H., man, was pronounced deceased at the scene."
After striking the truck, McKenzie's car hit a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier operated by 61-year-old George Peterson of Chelmsford, who was not injured in the collision.
McKenzie was also injured and taken to a local hospital while Pintone had his leg severed.
According to Seabrook Lt. Michael Gallagher, Massachusetts State Police contacted the department, requesting assistance notifying the victim's family. However, no one was at the victim's home when a Seabrook officer arrived. Gallagher said Massachusetts State Police thanked them for their efforts and attempted to find the victim's wife, who works in Haverhill.
According to Massachusetts State Police Lt. David Wilson, the accident is still under investigation by Troop A, Andover barracks, of the Massachusetts State Police, whose troopers responded to the scene, with the assistance of the State Police Collision and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The filing of any possible charges is still under investigation, Wilson said.
Also assisting at the scene were the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Chelmsford Fire and Police Departments and Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
