Bellesini Academy closer to renovating church

LAWRENCE — The second construction phase of a renovation of the former church housing Bellesini Academy is scheduled to begin next month.

The all-boys middle school has so far raised $1.1 million toward its $1.35 million goal set in 2005 to convert the former St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Donations have come from foundations, individuals and corporations. The biggest contribution was $500,000 and the smallest was $100.

"I'm very excited," said Bellesini's Executive Director Julie DiFilippo. "To think that we started in three trailers, moved into the building, and are now this far, it's incredible. This is going to be terrific for our students, our families and the community."

The second phase includes a science lab, computer lab, a library, and a multipurpose room for athletics, after-school activities and school gatherings. The school's book collection is now kept in a trailer, which also is used as the cafeteria.

"It will prepare our students better for high school because they will have a chance to do more hands-on experiments," DiFilippo said of the science lab.

A computer lab will be built so students can learn word processing, spreadsheets, Internet research and CD-ROM use.

"Our world is changing so much with computers. It's important to provide that here for our students so they can study, and do research."

The first phase of the renovation was done in 2005, and included installing a chairlift and new staircase, heating and cooling system, wiring, plumbing and fire sprinkler system. Four classrooms, administrative offices and a teachers' workroom also were completed.

Once the renovation is complete, students will have all activities within the school campus at 94 Bradford St. Presently, they go to the YMCA for gym and walk to city fields for soccer and baseball practices and games.

Bellesini was founded eight years ago and its first alumni are now in college, including Northeastern University, Salem State College and Merrimack College.

The private, tuition-free Catholic school, was established by Merrimack College and is dedicated to providing a quality education to boys from limited financial means living in Lawrence and preparing them to succeed in competitive secondary schools and colleges.

The school has 56 students, 93 percent of whom are of Hispanic descent and the rest Asian.
