LAWRENCE — A 29-year-old Beacon Avenue man was charged with trying to break into his grandmother's apartment while she is in the hospital, police said.
Carlos Baez, of 18 Beacon Ave., was seen going to the building at 1 Beacon St. by a maintenance worker who asked him where he was going, police said.
Baez told the worker he was going to the third floor, and a short time later another resident reported seeing a man, later identified as Baez, attempting to break into the apartment using a hammer, police said.
Police checked the building but Baez had gone, and when they checked 18 Beacon Ave., they found Baez on the floor in the bathroom.
He appeared to be under the influence of drugs and was arrested and brought to the station, police said.
He was charged with malicious destruction of property under $250 and attempted larceny.
