LAWRENCE — Two men were arrested Wednesday on charges of stealing copper and pool parts from a resident's home.
Francisco Rodriguez, 47, of 62 Trenton St., and Luis Melendez, 64, of 2 Fitz St., were arrested at a residence on Prospect Street after police said they found the men on the property loading copper into a pickup truck.
A caller told police the men were removing pipes from the house and taking parts from the above-ground pool at 206 Prospect St. Police found Rodriguez in the yard near the pool and Melendez on the driveway. According to the report, the back door of the house appeared to be forced open.
In the red pickup truck, police found copper pipes that appeared to have been removed from a refrigerator, along with a Hayward pool filter and a pool motor, according to the report. The men said they were on the property taking a shortcut to the river, and that they had found the copper and pool parts at the river.
While police were talking to the men, a resident came up and told the officers the two men had taken a refrigerator from his property on High Street.
Police asked Rodriguez and Melendez for identification. Rodriguez handed them his wallet, and police found a small plastic bag containing a white powder inside, according to the report. Rodriguez said he found the bag at the river, too.
Both Melendez and Rodriguez were charged with trespassing and larceny of items valued over $250. Rodriguez also was charged with possession of a class A substance.
