Fourth of July Festival raring to go in North Andover

NORTH ANDOVER — The Fourth of July Festival will offer a wee bit of Scotland tomorrow night.

The Campbell Highlanders are scheduled to display their bagpiping talent at 8 a.m. on the Common, after disc jockey Russ McQueen finishes his share of the evening’s entertainment. The Highlanders, based in Andover, made their first appearance in the festival last year.

Their presence was arranged at the last minute.

This year’s festival will begin at 5 p.m., with McQueen getting underway at that time. There will be an abundance of food vendors on the Common, according to Jeffrey Coco, co-chairman of the Festival Committee.

The moment most people who attend the festival will be waiting for will likely take place around 9:15 p.m., when the fireworks display will light up the skies. Atlas Pyrotechnics of Jaffrey, N.H., is expected to provide a half-hour show.

The fireworks will be launched from North Andover Middle School. Good viewing spots include North Andover High and Kittredge schools. One need not leave the Common, however, to get an adequate view of the nocturnal show.

The festival will continue the following day, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Besides an army of food vendors, the Common is expected to attract a wide assortment of crafters. The popular Beer and Wine Tent, run by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2104, will operate both days.

James Fazio, a member of the Festival Committee, said there will be “easy listening” music on the Fourth. He, Coco and other committee members will no doubt be praying for a lack of rain tomorrow and Thursday.
