LAWRENCE — In a case of what appears to be mistaken gender identity, a woman was slashed in the face while walking down Hampshire Street Wednesday before her assailants realized she was not a man.
The victim, described by police as a "short, heavy-set woman with a short haircut ... wearing baggy white T-shirt and baggy blue jeans," was walking on Hampshire Street near Auburn Street around 4 p.m. when she said she heard footsteps behind her.
According to the police report, her head was pulled back and an unknown person sliced her face. She yelled, 'I'm a girl, not a guy,' at which point one of the attackers said, 'It's a girl, let's go.'
The woman went to Lawrence General Hospital where she was treated for a 2-inch gash to the lower part of her cheek. The victim told police she did not see her attackers and could give no description of their clothing or other physical attributes.
