NORTH ANDOVER — A Bridges Lane man was arrested Monday afternoon after punching an officer in the face after resisting to be taken into protective custody.
Justin Cammarata, 30, of 101 Bridges Lane, was arraigned yesterday in Lawrence District Court and agreed to be held until Wednesday, when he is scheduled to return to court.
Police responded to his home after his parents called police, saying Cammarata was intoxicated and giving the family a hard time, according to a police report.
Cammarata would not cooperate with police. According to the report, police told Cammarata he was going to be placed into protective custody and not arrested.
“We managed to get the handcuffs on his left hand and at that time, he punched Sgt. (John) Pickard in the face with his right hand,” a police report read.
Pickard immediately used his service baton to strike Cammarata in the thigh to try to get him under control, according to the report.
Police were only able to get him under control after using pepper spray. He was transported to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment.
Cammarata was charged with assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
Pickard sustained an injury to his left hand during the struggle, but he did not seek treatment, according to police.
