---- — NORTH ANDOVER — Wearing an ankle bracelet issued by the federal immigration agency apparently did not stop a Lawrence woman from visiting Kohl’s department store and helping herself to some merchandise.
A loss prevention specialist at the 360 Winthrop Ave. store detained the woman Friday afternoon, according to the police log. Officer Patrick Beirne arrested Aura Yucute Zapata, 34, of 35 Bennington St., at 4:38 p.m. and charged her with shoplifting.
When police discovered the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bracelet on her ankle, they contacted the agency. After speaking with several ICE officials, the local department was advised that Zapata did not have to be held and could be released according to normal bail procedures, according to the police log.
Lt. Charles Gray, spokesman for the North Andover police, said he did not know why Zapata was wearing the bracelet – or why ICE said she didn’t have to be held.
