Sports in a Minute

This should be a huge “sort itself out” week in the Merrimack Valley Conference baseball race, opening with Billerica coming to Central Catholic this afternoon.

As we currently sit, Billerica leads the small division at 6-2, with Lawrence right there at 6-3. Haverhill is hanging around at 4-4.

In the large division, Chelmsford stands at 6-1, and Central remains in second at 6-2,

Huge games in the division this week include Billerica at Central today, with the Raiders headed to Chelmsford on Friday.

Lawrence High’s pitching staff will be tested depth-wise in what will be a pivotal stretch. The Lancers head to Methuen today and Haverhill Friday, with a home date against North Andover sandwiched in the middle on Wednesday.

We won’t know the champs after this week in both divisions, but the races could be a lot clearer come Friday night.

Merrimack College’s Ali Reed continues to roll through her college golf season. The sophomore from Westborough shot 75 in the opening round of the NCAA Super Regional at Joliet Country Club in Illinois, to grab the low score among four individuals, second overall.

Indianapolis University’s Jaclyn Schindler leads at 73, but Reed needs to keep her eyes on the three individuals behind her.

The leading individual, following rounds 2 and 3, will move on to the NCAA National Division 2 Championships, May 15 in Daytona Beach.

Recently, the New England Patriots and their charitable foundation hosted their annual “Science of Sports” Science Fair and, as always, a team from the Lawrence Boys Club stepped up and delivered a monster performance. The group called “GPA+1” studied the question, “How hard do you need to slide the stone in order to knock the opponent’s stone out of the target in curling? “

The group of Ayanna Vasquez, Kim Perez, Kiahyette Guzman and Bryanna Matias delivered a powerful performance, scoring a third-place overall to pick up a $500 scholarship.
