---- — METHUEN — A five-car crash shutdown traffic on a stretch of Broadway near the Salem border for about an hour yesterday.

Police Lt. Kevin Martin said Miriam DiVito, 40, of 335 Lafayette St. Apt. 2, in Salem, Mass., ran a red light near the Texas Roadhouse around 9:43 a.m., struck four vehicles with her 2004 Nissan Quest and walked away from the scene.

Police closed the busy street while they cleaned up the accident.

“There was debris everywhere,” Martin said.

While there were no serious injuries, five people were taken to local hospitals.

Around 12:15 p.m., DiVito was spotted across the street, yards away from where the accident happened. She threw herself on top of a passing motorist’s car when they stopped, the motorist thinking she wanted to cross the street. The police were called, and identified DiVito as the woman who fled the accident scene.

Police took her to the Holy Family Hospital and then charged her with a red light violation, operating a motor vehicle to endanger, a marked lane violation, four counts of leaving an accident scene with persons injured and four counts of leaving an accident with property damage.
