LAWRENCE — Ellen Bistany-Mastorakis doesn’t regularly go out for fun on a Thursday night — which makes what happened this Thursday seem all the more surreal to the Methuen mom.
She was at the Claddagh with her niece, when a friend texted her letting the motorcycle lover know that two stars of her favorite TV show — FX’s biker drama “Sons of Anarchary” — were having a bite to eat at Lawrence’s J. Brian’s Pub & Grille on South Union Street.
Bistany-Mastorakis, a Lawrence Animal Control Officer, thought this friend was joking. What, after all, would a pair of Hollywood actors be doing in Lawrence? However, the friend insisted the actors were there.
Thus, Bistany-Mastorakis couldn’t resist checking out the text for herself. With her niece in tow, she went to the bar and indeed met two stars of the series — Theo Rossi, who plays Juice, as well as Kim Coates, who plays Tig.
“It was pretty awesome,” Bistany-Mastorakis said yesterday. “I still have a smile, from ear to ear.”
It turns out the two were in town for the Northeast Motorcycle Expo in Boston this weekend, and had scheduled meet-and-greets with fans. One of the expo’s organizers, who lives in the area, brought them to Lawrence for a low-key bite to eat — and into their biggest fan’s orbit.
“It was unexpected, that’s for sure,” she said. “Meeting them in Lawrence, of all places, on a casual night out.”
Bistany-Mastorakis said the two were gracious, talking to everyone in the bar and taking pictures. Rossi and Coates mentioned they were excited about the Motorcycle Expo this weekend, but didn’t say much about any future episodes of the show.
“I was just so much in awe, I really couldn’t say too much,” said the starstruck fan.
Currently in its fifth season, “Sons of Anarchy” is one of FX’s most popular shows. Set in California, it follows the exploits of a motorcycle gang and it’s various legal and illegal enterprises. Star Katey Sagal (best known for her role as Peg Bundy on “Married with Children”) stars in the show as the wife of a the club’s founder and mother of its current president. She won a Golden Globe for her work on the series’ third season. Other stars include Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman.
Bistany-Mastorakis, whose husband owns Master Cycles in Plaistow, loves the show because she is loves motorcycles and seeing bikers enjoy themselves on the open road. She praised the actors for their work on the series, but could do without seeing much of the violence on the show.
Seeing the actors, on the other hand, is quite all right.
“There are a lot of good-looking guys on the show,” she said, with a laugh.
