Police charge 2 with drunken driving

NORTH ANDOVER – Police arrested two motorists Saturday and charged them with drunken driving. They also dealt with two other cases of possibly impaired driving.

A third person was initially charged with drunken driving, but instead was placed in protective custody because the evidence did “not rise to the level” of actually driving under the influence of liquor, according to police Lt. Charles Gray.

Another driver who sat in her car at a gas station pump for a half hour was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a Class A drug.

Police received a call at 3:23 p.m. Saturday about a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car that had crashed into a snowbank near 1725 Turnpike St. Peter St. Pierre, 49, of 100 North St., Salem, Mass., was arrested by Officer Stephen Diminico and charged with driving under the influence of liquor and a marked lanes violation.

Not far from that location several hours later, Walter Cabre Monterroza, 29, of 142 Sanborn St., Lawrence, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor, driving without a license and a marked lanes violation. Officer Jay Corr made the arrest at 11:17 p.m. near 1101 Turnpike St.

Police received a call at 7:12 p.m. Saturday about a woman who was still in her car a half hour after she had parked near a pump at Sam’s Mobil, 12 Massachusetts Ave. Officer Christopher Smedile arrested Cassandra Aspen, 22, of 777 Middle Road, Portsmouth, N.H., and charged her with illegal possession of a Class A drug.

The next day at 2:32 a.m., police received a call about a man who was sleeping behind the wheel of a car near Briarwood Court. Charged at first with drunken driving, the sleepy driver was ultimately placed in protective custody.

“Chief (Paul) Gallagher and the police department take reports of erratic operation very seriously,” Gray said.

People who see evidence of impaired driving should not hesitate to call the North Andover police at 978-683-3168, he said.
