LAWRENCE — Police recovered a bullet from a wall near where Victor Estevez was found dead in his home yesterday, and they're working on determining what happened in the attack.
A neighbor found Estevez, 36, dead inside his 94 Abbott St. home yesterday afternoon.
Police Chief John Romero said Estevez was murdered and suffered severe head trauma. Police were unable to tell if Estevez had a gunshot wound, Romero said.
Police are awaiting autopsy results to conclude what caused the trauma. Police are still trying to determine the motive for the homicide, and there are no suspects yet, Romero said.
"We're interviewing some people that knew him," the chief said.
Asked if the attack was drug related, Romero said, "We're not ruling that out."
Lawrence police arrested Estevez in January 2007 for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute at East Haverhill and Ferry streets.
Estevez's neighbor, Ivan Jusino, said another neighbor noticed Estevez's door was ajar yesterday morning and then saw that it was still open in the afternoon. A neighbor called police about 3:30 p.m. to report finding Estevez dead.
Jusino described Estevez as a nice guy who had two stepchildren and was good with Jusino's own kids.
"To the extent that I knew him, he was a great person," Jusino said. "He used to shovel for everybody."
Police were at the home this afternoon continuing the investigation.
