LAWRENCE — Police are investigating a reported shooting at the commuter rail train station on Merrimack Street.
The victim is reported to have a shotgun wound, and police found a spent round. The man reportedly wasn't shot on the train.
Police responded to the shooting about 6:30 p.m.
Just before 7 p.m., police Chief John Romero said police had found a man who was shot in the leg and was conscious. Romero had no identification for the man, who was taken to Lawrence General Hospital.
All trains into the city were stopped while police searched the tracks for the gunman, but by 6:55 p.m. service was allowed to resume.
The suspect is described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall with a medium to heavyset build. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue and white fitted hat and carrying a blue duffel bag. He may have been seen heading toward Salvatore's Restaurant, police said.
State police are on scene with a canine unit. That part of Lawrence is near the North Andover line, so North Andover police also were involved in searching for the suspect.
