Masked man robs Methuen bank

METHUEN — Police are looking for the public’s help in solving the armed robbery of the People’s United Bank branch at 148 Lowell St. early yesterday afternoon.

“It’s going to be a tough identification,” Methuen police Chief Joseph Solomon said last night, after reviewing photos from a bank surveillance camera that showed the suspect wearing a dark hoodie, a complete mask covering his face, hand gloves and blue jeans.

“We should have the video posted in a couple of days. Maybe people can identify him by the way he walks or stands. Sometimes, people can recognize somebody just from their gait,” the chief said.

The suspect, brandishing a large caliber silver handgun, walked up to the teller shortly before 1 p.m. and demanded money.

He fled with an undetermined amount of cash and was last seen getting into a small white four-door car with a Massachusetts license plate 1ZRY30 parked on a side street, according to police.

“He fled down Ashland Avenue toward Broadway. We believe he was alone,” Solomon said.

Police determined the license plate had been stolen from a car registered in Lawrence.

Detective Richard Pilz is overseeing the investigation. Anyone with information that knows anything about the robbery or recognizes the suspect should call Methuen Police 978-983-8677 or their local police department.
