Here are the 24 new principals and assistant principals appointed by Lawrence Public Schools for the 2013-14 academic year:
Adult Learning Center
Mary Giordano, Principal – The Lawrence native and Lawrence High School graduate has worked in the city’s School Department for 27 years, beginning as a substitute teacher. More recently, she was principal at the Guilmette Middle School.
Business, Management & Finance High School
Sean McCarthy, Principal – A 15-year veteran Lawrence schools who was an officer with the Lawrence Teachers’ Union. Most recently, he was the Assistant Principal for Lawrence High School for Math, Science, and Technology.
Ray Garcia, Assistant Principal – He was raised in Lawrence and educated in the city’s schools. He has been a science teacher since 1997; most recently was the acting assistant principal of the Business, Management and Finance High School.
Cheryl Corrigan, Assistant Principal – With the school system for 18 years, she has been a literacy coach for the past 12 years and has taught professional development workshops.
Melissa Larco, Principal – She taught seventh grade mathematics for the last three years at the Emily G. Wetherbee School where her students made the highest growth gains in the city; prior leadership experience at General Electric Company and in non-profit management.
Roberto Germán, Assistant Principal – He served as Director of Multicultural Affairs and Community Development for the past seven years at St. John’s Prep in Danvers. He is an alumnus of Andover Bread Loaf and member of the Bread Loaf Teacher Network.
Ethel Cruz, Acting Principal – Has worked in the city for 25 years, beginning as an elementary teacher and bilingual resource teacher. She first became an Assistant Principal in 2007, working at the Parthum School and most recently at the Guilmette Elementary School.
High School Learning Center
Robert Cayer, Principal – Nineteen year veteran of city schools, first as an elementary and middle school counselor at the Arlington School; worked for 11 years in the Adult Education Evening Program and for the past three years has been assistant principal at the Guilmette Middle School.
Lawrence High School
Juan Rodriguez, Assistant Headmaster of Personnel & School Culture – Began in 2005 as a middle school principal and later worked as the Supervisor of Curriculum at the Lawrence High School.
Timothy Finn, Assistant Headmaster of Operations & Organization – A 1986 graduate of Lawrence High School he has spent his entire career as an educator in Lawrence since being hired in 1991. He has worked as a physical education teacher, a behavior intervention specialist and Director of Athletics.
Christopher Cody, Acting Principal – He has worked in Lawrence since 1991 in a variety of positions at the middle, elementary and early childhood level. More recently, was the Assistant Principal at the Lawlor School.
Ann Constantino, Assistant Principal – With the school system for more than 30 years, she was initially hired as a Title I ESL teacher and has held a variety of literacy positions and has been interim Assistant Principal at the F.M. Leahy School since November 2011.
LTU Oliver Partnership
Sarah Lynch, Co-Leader – Has worked in the city since 2002 as an elementary teacher, special needs teacher, multi-subject curriculum coach for grades 1-4 and spent a year out of district as the assistant principal at the Walker School in Needham.
Nancy Parchuke, Co-Leader – Was hired in 1997 as a technology teacher and has held that position in several schools. She is a Lawrence native, a graduate of Lawrence High School and continues to live in the city.
Edward Reynoso, Principal – A veteran of 14 years in the school district beginning as a teacher at the Arlington School. In 2009, he became the principal at the Business, Management & Finance High School High School. Received a doctorate in 2010, and last year was principal of the Leonard School.
Jessica Cunningham, Assistant Principal – Began her teaching career in Lawrence in 2005 as a middle school ELA teacher; became literacy coach at the Leonard Middle School and was promoted to Assistant Principal of the Leonard Middle School last fall.
Rebecca Hyde, Principal – Her experience includes turn-around work at the Murkland School, a Level 4 school in Lowell. Most recently, she served as a language and literacy coordinator in Lowell.
Susan Carmona, Assistant Principal – She worked as District ELL Support Specialist at Level 3 and 4 schools in Lowell. Her teaching experience includes ELL Resource teacher/coach and classroom teacher at the elementary level.
James O’Keefe, Acting Principal – He has worked in Lawrence for 36 years beginning in the K-6 space as a teacher for 10 years; is currently the longest serving assistant principal, having been in the role for 26 years. More recently, he opened a hands on Science Center for Pre-K and K students.
School for Exceptional Studies at Bruce Annex
Dina Hickey, Acting Assistant Principal – A teacher and administrator for 16 years in Lawrence; was a middle school principal and the supervisor of ELA.
South Lawrence East Elementary
Marisa Boyijian, Acting Principal – She has worked 14 years in the city at the South Lawrence East Elementary School. She taught 4th grade for the first six years and later as Math/Science Coach for the past eight years.
Ada Ramos, Principal – Has worked in Lawrence for 19 years, beginning as a substitute teacher at the Breen and General Donovan schools, bilingual lead teacher at the Bruce, Tarbox and Guilmette schools, and for the last seven years, as the assistant principal at the Lawlor and Breen. Has a doctorate in school administration.
Komal Bhasin, Principal – Was the principal of Excel Academy Charter School in East Boston, where she worked from 2007 to 2012. Before Excel, she was the founding assistant principal of a KIPP-affiliated school in New Orleans, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Prior to that, she was a science teacher, first at a district school in New Orleans and later as a founding teacher in a KIPP-affiliated school turnaround venture in New Orleans.
UP Academy Oliver
Katie Abdelahad, Principal – She worked for two years at UP Academy Charter School of Boston, where she was a founding 6th grade English language arts teacher; taught at Donald McKay K-8 School in East Boston; taught for three years in Los Angeles where she started her teaching career.
