Occupation: Retired senior industrial engineer; U.S. Air Force veteran.

Community involvement: Served six years as chairman on the city Licensing Board, 2000-06; served as chairman of the Sacred Heart administration.
Political experience: Seeking fourth 2-year term as councilor-at-large.

Nilka I. Alvarez-Rodriguez, 53

Education: Bachelor's degree in Professional Studies from the College of Human Services; Master's in Business and Policy Studies  from the State University of New York, Empire State; doctorate in policy studies from Rochville University.

Community involvement: Served on the city's Human Rights Commission, board member of the Youth Council of the Merrimack Valley and a member of the Merrimack Valley Central Labor Council. A community advocate and union activist.

Maria D. De La Cruz, 55

Education: Cambridge College graduate.
Occupation: Taught in Lawrence schools for 17 years, including at the Leonard Elementary School, the Ninth Grade Academy and the Adult Learning Center. Currently unemployed.
Years lived in the City: 17 years.
Community involvement: Community activist.
Political experience: First-time candidate

Jorge A. Gonzalez, 56

Personal: Married, three children
Education: Graduated from high school in his native Ecuador
Occupation: School bus driver, liquor store worker.
Years lived in the City: 38.
Political experience: Served two terms on the School Committee (District C Arlington Neighborhood), followed by two terms in the City Council District C seat, until he lost his bid for a third term to Modesto Maldonado in 2009. He failed in an effort to reclaim the district council seat two years ago.

Mark A. Gray, 49

Community involvement: A community activist, she co-founded De La Mano Inc., a city-based non-profit organization that serves victims of domestic violence and features a hotline for battered women. She has also been shelter director of the Women’s Resource Center Program at YWCA of Haverhill.

Modesto Maldonado, 63

Education: Bachelor's from City College in New York; Master's in administrative education and counseling from Fitchburg State.
Occupation: Educator; real estate agent
Years lived in the City: 48
Political experience: Elected to City Council (2009), beating then-incumbent Jorge A. Gonzalez for District C Arlington Neighborhood seat. Did not seek reelection in 2011.
