BOSTON (AP) — State lawmakers could vote this week on a plan to help bail out the troubled city of Lawrence.
A spokesman says the House Ways and Means Committee may "take quick action" tomorrow after an 11 a.m. hearing on the bill that would give Lawrence $35 million to help balance its books.
The bill could come up for a House vote Wednesday. The Senate plans a Thursday session.
A spokesman for House Speaker Robert DeLeo said he would only back a bill with strong fiscal controls and oversight.
Since Gov. Deval Patrick filed the bill in December, opposition has mounted partly because new Mayor William Lantigua wants to keep his House seat. Lantigua is also facing a state ethics complaint after acknowledging in 2007 family court papers he helped his ex-wife land a city job.
Lantigua declined comment
