Bobby Bell 5-mile Road Race and Walk set for Sunday

---- — HAVERHILL — The 27th annual Bobby Bell 5-Mile Road Race/Walk kicks off on Sunday at the Lasting Room Grille, 122 Washington St.

The walk begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the race at 11 a.m. The fee is $25 for pre-entry and $30 the day of the event. Free T-shirts go to the first 70 walker entries and first 260 runner entries. There will be awards in various age, weight, and specialty categories. There will also be gender-graded scoring. A buffet will follow, along with raffle prizes and music from a disc jockey.

The event benefits local scholarships as well as the Haverhill Police Auxiliaries, Haverhill’s Brightside and the Andover Striders.

Black Cat Benefit Bash is tomorrow

METHUEN — Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley (ARMV) will hold its annual Black Cat Benefit Bash tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. at the historic Nevins Memorial Library, 305 Broadway, Methuen. This silent auction/fundraiser benefits the area’s homeless animals and will feature psychic readings, entertainment, food prepared by local chefs, a silent auction and raffles. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Proceeds help ARMV purchase food, provide medical care and fund sterilization clinics for the many feral, stray, and foster cats in its care. ARMV donation boxes are located at the Market Basket in RiversEdge and Westgate plazas in Haverhill, at Market Basket and Shaw’s in Plaistow, N.H., at Market Basket in North Andover and Lawrence and at Stop & Shop in Methuen. CCHS holds homecoming

LAWRENCE — Central Catholic High School will celebrate its annual Homecoming Football Game on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at Lawrence Veterans’ Stadium. The game features the Central Catholic Raiders vs. the Lowell High Red Raiders.

CCHS alumni and friends are invited to a pre-game “End Zone Tailgate BBQ” from 5:30-7 p.m. featuring hot dogs, burgers, pizza, chicken, meat pies and refreshments at nominal cost.

Face-painting, cotton candy, photo booth and a “bouncy house” are all part of the pre-game festivities for families. All CCHS alumni and friends are invited. Students are admitted to the game with their school ID. Game tickets for guests will be sold at the gate.

Alumni (21 and over) are invited to a post-game gathering at Jocelyn’s Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge, Route 28, Salem, N.H. with complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.

The Homecoming Dance & Buffet for CCHS students will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Students can purchase Homecoming Dance tickets at the school.

Central Catholic will hold its annual Open House for prospective students on Sunday, Oct. 20, 1 to 4 p.m. Middle school students and their families may visit and learn more about the school’s college preparatory academic program and extracurricular offerings.

Parents invited to learn about technology

HAVERHILL — The District Parent Council invites parents to learn about technology in the classroom on Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the i-School at Haverhill High School, 137 Monument St. Learn about the technology that is being implemented and see the effect it has on education.

From the SmartBoards that are installed in every classroom in the high school to the carts of iPads and Macs, including how Google Drive is utilized to connect teachers and students, learn about available resources and the impact they have on your child’s education.

Open House at MPD

METHUEN — The Police Department will be hosting its annual Open House this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the station, located at 90 Hampshire St.

The department will have equipment on display, including its command unit, a cruiser, motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, marine unit, swat table, Bearcat Armored Vehicle, as well as two K-9 demonstrations.

Pumpkin Festival at Chris’ Farm Stand

HAVERHILL — Chris’s Farm Stand in Bradford is holding its annual Fall Pumpkin Festival on weekends all this month, including Columbus Day.

The farm stand is at 436 Salem St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Family-friendly activities include a hay maze, hay castle, educational hay rides, photos opportunities, animal and tractor displays, pony rides, face painting, art by local artists, games, BBQ and treats. Moran to hold office hours

Representative Frank A. Moran will be hosting office hours on Oct. 11 at the Andover Public Library in the activity room from 11 a.m. until noon. He will be at the Lawrence Public Library from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. and at Nevins Library in Methuen from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

All residents of the 17th Essex district are invited to attend to discuss any issues of concern.
