Police probe robbery of car wash

LAWRENCE — Police shut down the railroad yard in the south part of the city early last night as they launched a search for a man who allegedly robbed an attendant at a car wash at gunpoint.

Lawrence police responded to a report at about 6:30 that a heavyset man wearing a black Red Sox baseball cap robbed a car wash on South Broadway at about 6:30 p.m.

Police said the suspect wore blue jeans and a gray sweatshirt in a bulletin broadcast to area law enforcement agencies. Police said he was about 5’’6, with his hair tied in a bun and wearing his Red Sox baseball hat backwards. Police said they believe he fled on foot and walked down the rail road tracks near the area after the robbery.

The suspect allegedly pointed a silver pistol at the cashier of the car wash.

At one point, police had to notify Lawrence railroad to suspend trains while they searched for the suspect. Lawrence police also used the canine unit to assist in the man hunt.

Police would not return calls on requests for further information on the incident. the Investigation to find suspect continued last night
