Man arrested after early-morning shooting

LAWRENCE — A 26-year-old Bennington Street man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a city woman early yesterday.

Police said Luis Nunez, 26, of 109 Bennington St., No. 3, shot Juana Familia, 21, of 71 Fern St., just before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of Bennington and Fern streets, in the city's northeast section off of Lawrence Street.

Familia was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital after the shooting but is expected to survive, according to police Chief John Romero.

Nunez has been charged with assault with intent to murder, armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without a license.

He was also found with cocaine and marijuana in his possession, according to a police report.
