LAWRENCE — Police arrested a North Andover man yesterday and charged him in the Friday night shooting at the Merrimack Street commuter rail station in Lawrence.
Lawrence police Chief John Romero said Mark Greenlaw, 30, of 17 Union St., North Andover, shot his friend Taylor Harrington in the left leg with a shotgun at about 6:30 Friday night.
Harrington, 25, of East Boston, initially told police that he was shot by a stranger. But Romero said Greenlaw and Harrington know each other from previous stints in prison.
"We were suspicious about it from the very beginning," said Romero. "We weren't buying it. And it turned out as we expected."
Romero said Greenlaw was placed in custody by North Andover police after leaving his home yesterday afternoon.
On Friday, police received a 911 emergency call at 6:26 p.m. reporting a man shot on the platform at the train station on Merrimack Street. Patrol officers arrived soon after at the station at the intersection of South Union and Merrimack streets.
There, they found Harrington on a passenger bench, bleeding from a gaping wound in his left leg below the knee and screaming for help, according to police.
