LAWRENCE — Steven Kurelko was found to be a danger to the community, but was freed from custody after a judge set $5,000 cash bail and strict conditions for his release.
Kurelko, 35, of 2 Forest Ridge Road, Derry, N.H., was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a vehicle, speeding, and a marked lanes violation after his Ford Escape, traveling an estimated 100 mph, sideswiped one car in the eastbound lane of Route 213 and then struck a car carrying two women from Chelmsford. The car rolled over and one of the women was ejected.
Witnesses told police Kurelko's sport utility vehicle rolled over several times as well.
Both women were taken to Lawrence General Hospital and then airlifted to Boston hospitals, where they are in stable condition.
Yesterday's hearing was a continuation of the hearing that began Monday to determine whether probable cause existed to go forward with a hearing to determine whether Kurelko posed a danger to the community and should remain in jail until his trial.
At the conclusion of yesterday's hearing, Judge Mark Sullivan found Kurelko to be a danger, but agreed to release him on $5,000 cash bail with strict conditions.
If he posts bail, Kurelko must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet, submit to random Breathalyzer tests, refrain from drinking, refrain from driving, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings three times a week, and observe a curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
He is allowed to work.
