State transportation chief will speak
METHUEN — The Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce will present "Transportation 2010" Sept. 20 at Jackson's Restaurant, 478 Lowell St., from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m.
The speaker will be state Secretary of Transportation Jeff Mullan. He will speak about what business people need to know, including the changes that may be taking place and how they would impact business.
Cost is $20 for members and $35 for nonmembers, and includes a breakfast buffet. Reservations can be made by calling 978-686-0900.
Children's recreation classes offered
HAMPSTEAD — The Community Resources Association is offering a variety of fall classes for children.
These include music, gym and craft classes.

Sixth annual Art of the Common is Saturday
LONDONDERRY — Art on the Common Fine Art Show will celebrate its sixth annual event on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Londonderry Town Common at the intersection of Mammoth and Pillsbury roads.
Sponsored by the Londonderry Arts Committee, this event includes artists from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. All art featured will be two-dimensional in oil, pastel, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, and colored pencil/multimedia. Joan Tierney and Cameron Bennett will judge.
The rain date is Sunday.
City to host parking study workshops
HAVERHILL — The city will be holding parking focus group workshops, which are open to downtown businesses, on Friday from 8 to 10 a.m., and Sept. 15 and 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Pentucket Bank Community Room, 35 Merrimack St.
Business owners and downtown employees are encouraged to drop in anytime during the workshop to discuss parking needs, issues and ideas for improving downtown. Mayor James Fiorentini said these workshops are an important part of the city's downtown parking review which will result in the development of a broad parking management strategy.

NECC nursing to mark its 40th anniversary
HAVERHILL — Northern Essex Community College will celebrate its nursing program's 40th anniversary with a reunion on Sept. 23.
All nursing and practical nursing graduates, faculty and staff are invited.
The event will be in the Technology Center on the college's Haverhill Campus. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the reunion is at 6 p.m. with a welcome from President David Hartleb.
The cost is $25 and includes a catered buffet dinner and a presentation titled "Hot Topics in Nursing Practice" by Dr. Margaret Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Health Education Associates Inc. Continuing education credits are available.
Alumni Director Libby Jensen wants to honor all graduates of the first class, which graduated in 1970, at the reunion. So far, she has located all but five members of the class of 26 graduates.
