WINDHAM — The field of candidates for the new community development director's position has been whittled to four.
Selectmen will interview the candidates today and expect to chose the director next Monday in nonpublic session, Selectman Ross McCleod said yesterday.
Selectmen and Town Administrator Dave Sullivan will make the selection. They expect the person to be on the job by some time in August, McCleod said.
Personally, McCleod said he is looking for a self-starter who will listen to what the town wants for economic development and market the town accordingly.
"It has to be consistent with what the town wants," he said.
The director will head the Planning Department and receive an annual salary of between $70,000 and $85,000, depending on experience.
Galen Stearns, the chairman of the Board of Selectmen, was one of 31 people who applied for the position.
McCleod had no comment on whether Stearns is among the four finalists.
Town officials said earlier that Stearns would not participate in any facet of the candidate search or selection.
If chosen for the post, he would resign his position on the Board of Selectmen.
Earlier this year, following the first advertisement of the opening, three people were offered the job and turned it down. The board decided to readvertise, rather than dig deeper into the stack of resumes.
Meanwhile, the planning office has hired Windham resident Tracey Mulder to fill the vacant planning assistant position.
The duties of the 20-hour-a-week job include compiling minutes of Planning Board meetings, tracking financial forms for applications to the Planning Department and general office duties.
Mulder started work July 1.
